Garbled connections

Hello All,

I've been using pen 0.6.2 on FreeBSD 4.5-RELEASE to load balance HTTP
traffic among two backend servers (Apache 1.3.22). I had previously been
only using one server, without any problems. When I introduced pen into the
mix, I began occasionally seeing pages served through the cluster as a
bunch of garbled characters, followed by a server HTTP status message (see
below). I am using pen with -h, -p, and -w, based on what I had seen in the
howto. Can anyone explain why this might be happening?

HTTP/1.1 200 OK Date: Thu, 11 Apr 2002 20:36:56 GMT Server: Apache/1.3.22
