You should add a control port to the pen command line, like this:
pen -C 12345 [rest of command line]
Then you can use penctl to check the status, reconfigure pen,
blacklist and unblacklist servers on the fly without restarting
pen.
For example:
penctl localhost:12345 status
will give you a status overview in html format.
"man penctl" tells about the other wonders of penctl.
